Howth Road by Rachel Carmody Design Limited

This project designed by Rachel Carmody Design Limited involved the full refurbishment, extension, and garden room addition, to an existing modernist dwelling originally built in the 1930s along the Howth Road, in north Dublin, Ireland. Photography by Ste Murray.

The brief was to create a contemporary light-filled family home, filled with colour and playful details, that would sit comfortably with the original house. The clients, both academics, had a huge volume of books to house and we designed a new staircase around a large double height bookcase. The new waterfall window to the rear extension brings in an abundance of light and extends the central circulation axis of the existing dwelling. We repeated this waterfall detail to the garden room, so the rear extension elevation and garden room elevation are mirrored – these long axis lines throughout the project give a great sense of space.

The terrazzo island informed the colour palette – and shades of black, blue, red, mustard and green were used to stain the maple fitted furniture in each room. A different variant of terrazzo tile is used in each of the four bathrooms.
