Canterbury Road by Elenberg Fraser

Canterbury Road is a project designed by Elenberg Fraser and is located in the leafy suburb of Surrey Hills, the luxury residences along Canterbury Road visually extend to the lush landscape of Surrey Gardens – the site is an extension of the gardens. Curated native landscaping, from a public garden fronting Canterbury Road to intimate terrace plantings, strengthens the fusion of the gardens with the built form and promotes a renewed sense of identity. The architecture respects and communicates with the existing environment. The stepped architectural form follows the natural slope of the land, a robust frame provides a buffer to Canterbury Road and directs views towards the gardens, full-height glazing increases natural daylight and is angled to capture prevailing breezes for cross-ventilation, while the top utilises mesh screens to balance light, privacy and views. Native landscaping and natural materials are integral to the connection to the surrounding gardens with the external finishes and interior spaces, provoking a sensory experience.

From entry to the residences, the design captures the essence of home. A large front garden, lounge and dedicated lifting creates a sense of arrival. Dual-aspect residences, large outdoor courtyards and zoned living allow for an intimate home experience. Canterbury Road is about honesty in form, direct materials and intimacy in space to promote a unique sense of place.
