Powell Street House is a project designed by Robert Simeoni Architects. Occupying a compact site in South Yarra, this existing 1930’s duplex comprised a ground floor and first floor apartment, each with its own external access. The owners wished to unite these two dwellings to form a single residence. Photography by Derek Swalwell.
The fusion of elements is one of the highlights of this project. In the dining room, Olivia Messa and Luciana Penna, from Messa Penna Arquitetura, created a moodboard to highlight the beauty of natural wood. The huge windows, in addition to illuminating the entire environment, bring green into the apartment. To compose the decor of this space, they chose Bertolucci’s Cine pendant, signed by Camila Sarpi. Burnt Cedar is a project designed by Faulkner Architects. This is a full-time beach house for a car passionate family of four situated across from Burnt Cedar Beach in Incline Village, Nevada on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Prior to being pulled up the hill to flumes and rails destined for Virginia City, logs were staged here as the mountains around the lake shore were logged during the silver mining years of the 1860s. Beiriz House is a project designed by Raulino Silva. The allotment of Violantas was designed along a street with lots on both sides and is located in the parish of Beiriz. The surrounding area has fields for cultivating corn and grass, but to the west in the distance you can already see the “towers” of the city, in Póvoa de Varzim. Photography by João Morgado.
Chimney House is a project designed by Atelier DAU. This inner city site proposed enormous potential given its generous width granted via the vacant block within its title. In addition to a rear expansion and thorough renovation within the existing terrace home, a new single garage with a self-contained apartment above it now flanks the property, concealed behind a custom perforated bronze screen incorporating a garage door. This façade is designed as a flat graphic, allowing natural light to enter whilst maintaining privacy within. In tandem with the terrace’s heritage façade, it reads tonally as one consistent surface that will age gracefully. Photography by Tom Ferguson.
A person planning a house on a meadow above a subterranean lake from the former glacial period has either nerves of steel or not the faintest idea. This is what happened to the Berlin architect Carlos Zwick when he wanted to construct a summer residence for his family of 8 in his Allgäu homeland. Photography by Tomek Kwiatosz.
